Marine carpet being installed on aluminium boat deck with industrial adhesive

Marine Carpet Glue — What Actually Works on Aluminium?

Installing marine carpet onto aluminium sounds simple until the glue fails. Bubbling, peeling, slipping and heat-related lifting are all common when the wrong adhesive is used. Aluminium is a challenging surface because it heats rapidly in the sun, has a smooth non-porous texture, and is constantly exposed to vibration and moisture. The right adhesive is essential if you want a long-lasting professional finish.

Why Aluminium Is Hard to Bond To

Aluminium expands and heats up extremely quickly. This causes low-grade adhesives to soften and release. Its smooth texture gives glues little surface area to grip. Boats and trailers also flex under load, and moisture is always present. These factors make water-based glues, cheap spray adhesives and general-purpose adhesives unsuitable.

Bostik AW 107 — The Best Overall Adhesive for Aluminium + Marine Carpet

Bostik AW 107 Anchorweld is a solvent-based, spray-grade contact adhesive widely used in marine, upholstery and industrial applications. It is one of the most reliable and longest-lasting adhesives for bonding marine carpet to aluminium.

AW 107 offers excellent heat resistance, strong bonding to aluminium and rubber-backed carpet, and a powerful initial grab. It performs exceptionally well on aluminium boat decks, trailer flooring, storage compartments, hatch lids and vertical panels.

High-Temperature Spray Adhesives (L32 or 3M Hi-Strength 90)

Industrial spray adhesives such as L32 Spray Adhesive or 3M Hi-Strength 90 are also strong options for marine carpet installations. They provide high heat resistance, strong adhesion to aluminium and a consistent spray pattern that works well on large panels. These products are ideal for fast installations and large flat areas.

Only industrial high-temperature sprays are suitable. Standard hardware sprays will fail quickly under heat.

Polyurethane and MS Polymer Adhesives — What They Are Actually Used For

Polyurethane and MS Polymer adhesives bond extremely well to aluminium and remain flexible and waterproof. However, they are not designed to be full-coverage carpet glues. They cure more slowly, do not spread evenly over large areas and can create raised spots under carpet. For this reason, they are not recommended as the primary adhesive for installing marine carpet on aluminium.

Where they excel is in reinforcement. Products such as Soudal T-Rex Power Fast Grip and T-Rex Wall & Floor (both MS Polymer adhesives sold at Iron Link) are excellent for strengthening edges, corners, joins and high-stress areas. These zones experience the highest movement and lifting forces, and MS Polymer adhesives add a flexible, impact-resistant layer of security that significantly reduces peel-back over time.

To reinforce marine carpet installations, use a small bead of MS Polymer adhesive along the carpet edges, around corners, inside hatch cutouts and anywhere the carpet may experience extra strain. This combination of a primary contact adhesive with MS Polymer reinforcement provides the strongest and longest-lasting installation.

What Fails on Aluminium and Should Be Avoided

Water-based adhesives have poor bond strength on aluminium and break down quickly when exposed to heat or moisture. General-purpose spray adhesives soften at low temperatures, and aluminium surfaces can exceed 80°C in full sun. PVA glue, craft glues and silicone sealants are not suitable for marine carpet bonding under any circumstances.

Surface Preparation for the Strongest Bond

Preparation is crucial. Clean the aluminium thoroughly using wax and grease remover. Lightly sand with 120–180 grit to create a profile. Vacuum away dust, then wipe the aluminium with isopropyl alcohol. Proper surface prep dramatically increases the adhesive bond strength and longevity.

Correct Application Technique

When using contact adhesives like Bostik AW 107, apply adhesive to both the carpet backing and the aluminium. Allow the adhesive to become tacky before joining the surfaces. Once contact adhesive sticks, it cannot be repositioned. Apply firm, even pressure or use a roller to activate the bond.

Avoid installing carpet in direct sunlight because heat accelerates curing and reduces working time. Reinforce edges, corners and high-wear zones with extra adhesive or a bead of polyurethane/MS polymer to prevent lifting.

Final Recommendation

For bonding marine carpet to aluminium, the most reliable choice is Bostik AW 107 Anchorweld. It provides the strongest long-term bond and the best heat resistance. For large flat surfaces or fast installations, L32 Spray Adhesive or 3M Hi-Strength 90 are excellent alternatives. For added durability on edges, seams and stress points, polyurethane or MS polymer adhesives offer extra reinforcement.

Using the correct adhesive from the beginning ensures a cleaner finish, fewer failures and long-lasting results on any aluminium boat or trailer project.
